Today we’re going to present a simple breathing exercise that works for most people going through a cold or suffering from the flu. The method will expel all the phlegm in your nasal passages, and will only take 2 minutes of your time. It doesn’t require any special equipment, not even a Neti pot. If you’ve tried anything else and your nose is still stuffed, this method may help. We suggest consulting a doctor first, however, as your stuffed nose may be an indication of a bigger problem, although it’s most likely a cold.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Close your nostrils with your fingers by pinching them and hold your breath, then start walking faster than the usual;
  • If you can’t hold your breath for long, you can take a breath or two – just hold it until you feel the need to breath;
  • Now, sit down on a chair with your back straight and your chest up and shoulders back;
  • Close your mouth and start breathing through your nose – you need to take small breaths instead of inhaling deep. Exhale deeply and relax all your muscles;
  • Continue taking small breaths through your nose, and exhale deep. Focus on relaxing your shoulders and back for a couple of minutes. The exercise aims to open up your nasal passages as your body is trying to grasp for air;
  • At the same time, your nasal passages will start clearing. Even if you feel better during the day, we strongly urge you to breathe through your nose.
