This disease has even a third of women and a quarter of the male population. The latest data from the Institute for Thrombosis Research(TRI) in London, showed that blood clots in 95 percent of cases are guilty for the occurrence of stroke or heart attack, and half a million Europeans die of the effects of a blood clot forming in the blood. Obesity is a high-risk factor for thrombosis. Women who have a surplus around hips are at increased risk of developing life-threatening blood clots, as well as men with fat deposits around the waist. Danish researchers conducted a ten-year study that involved nearly 60,000 men and women. The survey showed a clear link between the body part with fat and the risk of blood clots in the veins or “deep vein thrombosis”. In an article published in the medical journal Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, the researchers recorded 641 cases of deep vein thrombosis in a population of 27,178 men and 29,876 women aged from 50 to 64 years.
They found a link between deep vein thrombosis and body weight, body mass index, total amount of body fat, waist circumference and hips volume. It has been shown that excess weight appears to affect women and men differently. Researchers have found a connection between the extent of the hips and deep venous thrombosis in women but not in men, and between waist circumference andtrombosis to men. Scientists say that 30 minutes of physical activity a day is enough to prevent the occurrence of clots.
A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acid
Limit your intake of animal products, meat, eggs and dairy products with high fat content. Omega-6 fatty acids (from vegetables, nuts, whole grains, seeds, and olive oil), omega-3 fatty acids (from oily fish and pumpkin seeds), plant estrogens (from soy-based products) and soluble fiber (found in oat bran and apples) assist in combating the harmful effects of fat in the blood.
Iron supplements could be used to prevent blood clots, reveals the research of Imperial College. The study was conducted on 609 patients with diseases of the blood vessels. Among those who took iron risk of clots decreased.
– If the level of iron in the blood is less than 17 micromoles per liter, the risk of thrombosis is twice as large – says lead researcher Dr. Claire Shovlin.
