According to new research, there’s a new healthy heart superfood. That food? Walnuts!
In particular, research shows that even just a handful of walnuts each day can offer immediate protection against cardiovascular disease, and regularly adding them to your diet can offer long-term benefits.
Within four hours of eating a handful of nuts, in fact, scientists have already noted a significant improvement in blood flow and cholesterol.
In addition, walnuts affect serum cardiovascular risk factors far more effectively than most other nuts.
“And only by consuming a handful of walnuts or walnut oil for four days in a week you can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease,” said Dr. Penny Kris Etherton, professor of nutrition at Penn State University in Pennsylvania.
Her study is the first to actively note that walnuts are more beneficial than other nuts – and that a mere three spoonfuls of walnut oil is enough to have profound effects within only a few hours.
