Good healthy smoothie recipes balance three things: fruit for taste, something creamy with protein so the glass keeps you full, and a little fibre so it is not just sweet juice. The main recipe here is a pale green breakfast smoothie with palak (spinach), banana, curd, a spoon of oats and peanut butter, and it tastes of banana and mint rather than leaves.
Further down sit eight smoothie formulas with quantities, from banana oats and mango to papaya and an ABC glass of apple, beetroot and carrot, plus a simple way to balance any smoothie you invent, and honest answers if you are drinking smoothies to lose weight.

Ingredients
Makes 2 tall glasses (about 350 ml each)
- 2 cups palak (spinach) leaves, loosely packedwashed, thick stems removed
- 2 ripe bananas, mediumpeeled and sliced, frozen if possible
- 1 cup thick curd (dahi), chilled
- ½ cup toned milk, chilledor water
- 3 tbsp rolled oats
- 1 tbsp peanut butter, unsweetened
- 2 tsp chia seeds
- 8 pudina (mint) leaves
- ½ inch gingerpeeled
- 4 ice cubesskip if the banana is frozen
You will need
- Mixer grinder with the large jar, or a blender
- Knife and board
Method
Prepare the banana
Slice the bananas into coins. If you can, freeze them for 2 hours or overnight in a box; frozen banana makes the smoothie thick and cold without watering it down.
Soften the oats
Put the oats and chia in the mixer jar with the milk and let them sit for 5 minutes while you wash the spinach. This short soak stops gritty bits in the finished glass.
Load the jar in order
Add the curd, then the spinach, mint and ginger, then the banana and peanut butter on top. Liquids at the bottom help the blades catch everything.
Blend in pulses, then run
Pulse 3 or 4 times to break down the leaves, then blend for 45 to 60 seconds until completely smooth and an even pale green with no visible flecks of leaf.
Check thickness and taste
It should pour slowly like thick lassi. Too thick, add a splash of milk or water; too thin, add a few more frozen banana coins. Taste: if your bananas were not very ripe, blend in 2 dates rather than sugar.
Serve straight away
Pour into glasses with the ice cubes and drink within 20 minutes. Spinach smoothies darken and separate as they stand, and the chia keeps thickening.
Tips that make the difference
- Use baby spinach or tender palak leaves; mature leaves with thick stems taste grassy.
- Very ripe, spotty bananas make the glass sweet enough without honey.
- Mixer grinders heat up on long runs. Blend in two 30 second bursts so the curd stays cold.
- If you dislike the taste of greens, start with 1 cup spinach and work up.
- Swap peanut butter for 1 tbsp soaked almonds or roasted chana for a nut-butter-free glass.
Storing: Smoothies are best fresh. If you must, fill a bottle to the brim, close it tightly and refrigerate for up to 12 hours; shake well before drinking. Do not keep a curd smoothie at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
How to build healthy smoothie recipes: the balance rule
A smoothie can be a balanced small meal or a glass of sugar. The difference is the ratio. For one tall glass, use this shape:
| Part | Amount per glass | Choose from |
|---|---|---|
| Fruit | 1 to 1.5 cups (150 to 200 g) | Banana, mango, papaya, berries, apple, pineapple, guava |
| Protein and creaminess | 0.5 to 1 cup | Curd, Greek yogurt, milk, paneer, silken tofu, whey |
| Fibre and slow carbs | 1 to 2 tbsp | Rolled oats, chia, flax, soaked almonds |
| Vegetables (optional) | A handful | Spinach, cucumber, carrot, beetroot |
| Liquid | As needed | Milk, water, coconut water |
Notice that sweeteners are not on the list. Ripe fruit is already sweet, and juice, honey or sugar on top makes the glass drink like a dessert. The green smoothie in the recipe card follows this rule and comes to about 320 kcal with 11 g protein in each glass.
8 smoothie recipes with quantities
Each formula makes one glass of about 300 ml. Blend the liquid and soft fruit first, then add ice. Approximate numbers come from the same nutrition table we use for every recipe on this site.
1. Banana oats smoothie
1 ripe banana (100 g), 2 tbsp rolled oats soaked 5 minutes in 0.75 cup cold toned milk, a pinch of cinnamon. A filling, simple banana smoothie recipe for school mornings. About 250 kcal, 8 g protein.
2. Mango smoothie recipe
1 cup ripe mango pieces (150 g), 0.4 cup curd, 0.25 cup milk, 2 ice cubes. For a mango smoothie without yogurt, use 0.75 cup chilled milk and 1 tbsp soaked almonds instead. Half a banana in place of half the mango gives a mango banana smoothie that is thicker. About 180 kcal, 6 g protein with curd.
3. Strawberry smoothie recipe (or any berry)
1 cup strawberries (100 g), half a banana, 0.5 cup curd. For a blueberry smoothie recipe, or a mixed berry smoothie recipe, use 1 cup frozen berries and add 2 tbsp water. Strawberry banana is the classic pairing because banana softens the sharpness. About 150 kcal, 6 g protein.
4. Papaya smoothie recipe
1 cup ripe papaya (150 g), 0.4 cup curd, 1 tsp lemon juice, 1 tsp flax seeds. Lemon lifts papaya's musky taste. About 110 kcal, 5 g protein, a good light pick.
5. Spinach pineapple smoothie
1 cup spinach (30 g), 1 cup pineapple (120 g), half a cucumber, 6 mint leaves, a small piece of ginger and 0.6 cup coconut water. Dairy free and tangy. About 100 kcal and only 2 g protein, so pair it with eggs or a chilla.
6. ABC smoothie (apple, beetroot, carrot)
1 small apple (100 g), 0.25 small beetroot (50 g, peeled), 1 small carrot (60 g), a small piece of ginger, 1 tsp lemon juice and 0.5 cup water. Blend well and do not strain, so you keep the fibre. If you just want a plain apple smoothie recipe, blend 1 apple with half a banana, 0.5 cup curd and a pinch of cinnamon. About 100 kcal, 7 g fibre.
7. Avocado smoothie recipe
Half a small avocado (60 g), half a banana, 0.8 cup cold milk and 1 tsp honey. Creamy and rich in fat, so keep the portion to one glass. About 270 kcal, 8 g protein.
8. Watermelon mint smoothie
2 cups seedless watermelon (250 g), 6 mint leaves, 1 tsp lemon juice and 1 tsp chia stirred in after blending. More a cooler than a meal at about 70 kcal.
Best smoothie recipes for weight loss: an honest view
Weight loss smoothie recipes work only if the glass takes the place of breakfast or a snack, not if it is added on top of breakfast. Keep these points in mind:
- Fruit sugar still counts. Blended fruit is easy to drink in large amounts. Two mangoes in one glass is a lot of sugar even though it is natural.
- Protein keeps you full. A glass with curd, Greek yogurt or a little whey holds you longer than a fruit-and-water blend.
- Portion: one glass of 300 to 350 ml, made with 1 to 1.5 cups fruit.
- Skip juice as a base. Use water, milk or coconut water.
- Watch the extras. Each tbsp peanut butter is about 95 kcal and each tbsp honey about 60.
A banana smoothie recipe for weight loss, for example, would use one banana, 0.5 cup curd, 1 tbsp oats and water, not two bananas with ice cream. Green smoothie recipes for weight loss with spinach, cucumber and pineapple are low in calories but also low in protein, so eat something with protein alongside. Multi-day smoothie cleanses are not needed; a varied diet with enough protein, vegetables and water serves you better.
Smoothie recipes for weight gain and for kids
For high calorie smoothie recipes, keep the same base and add energy-dense extras: full fat milk, two spoons of nut butter, 4 dates, a handful of soaked almonds and 3 tbsp oats with one or two bananas. That glass can pass 800 kcal, useful for growing teenagers or anyone who struggles to eat enough.
For smoothie recipes for kids, go simple: banana and milk, mango and curd, or chikoo with milk. Leave out chia for toddlers unless soaked well, skip ginger, and serve in a small glass with breakfast rather than in place of it. Whole fruit is more filling than the same fruit blended, so keep a smoothie as one part of the day, not the only way anyone at home eats fruit.
Smoothie bowl recipes
A smoothie bowl is just a thicker blend eaten with a spoon. Use frozen fruit and only 3 to 4 tbsp liquid so it holds its shape. For a mango smoothie bowl, blend 1.5 cups frozen mango with 0.33 cup Greek yogurt, pour into a wide bowl and top with sliced banana, a spoon of chia, pumpkin seeds and a few pomegranate arils. Eat it slowly; toppings add up, so pick three at most.
For a cold breakfast you can prepare the night before instead, our overnight oats follow a similar fruit-plus-dairy idea.
Common smoothie problems and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Gritty texture | Let oats and chia sit in the milk or curd 5 minutes first |
| Too thin and watery | Use frozen fruit instead of ice; add 1 tbsp oats |
| Grassy taste from spinach | Use tender leaves, add mint, lemon or more banana |
| Brown or grey colour | Drink right away; add a squeeze of lemon |
| Curd turns bitter or sour | Use fresh curd; do not over-blend in a hot mixer |
| Mixer jar will not blend | Add liquid first, pulse, and scrape down the sides |
When you need more protein than a smoothie gives
Most fruit smoothie recipes land between 2 and 10 g protein. That is fine with a meal, but low if the glass is your whole breakfast. Add 0.5 cup Greek yogurt, 50 g paneer, or 2 tbsp roasted chana powder (sattu) to any formula above. For drinks built mainly around protein, with or without whey powder, see our protein shake recipe. A light fruit smoothie also sits well beside a savoury plate of moong dal chilla, or beside besan chilla on busy mornings.
Questions cooks ask
Can I make a smoothie without curd or milk?
Yes. Use water or coconut water and add body with banana, soaked oats or soaked almonds. Protein will be lower, so pair it with eggs, a chilla or some roasted chana on the side.
Is it okay to mix milk and fruit in a smoothie?
Most people digest milk-and-fruit smoothies like banana milk or mango milk without trouble. If sour fruits like pineapple or orange make milk split or upset your stomach, use curd or water with those instead.
How do I make a smoothie thick without ice cream?
Freeze sliced banana or mango in advance, use thick curd, and add 1 to 2 tbsp oats. Keep the liquid low and add it gradually.
Can I make smoothies the night before?
They are best fresh because they separate and darken. A better plan is to put chopped fruit, oats and seeds in a box in the fridge at night, then blend with cold curd in the morning in two minutes.
What are good easy smoothie recipes with 3 ingredients?
Banana, milk and oats; mango, curd and ice; or papaya, curd and lemon. Each is a decent glass with almost no effort; the ones with curd or milk carry more protein.
Are smoothies healthier than juice?
Usually yes, because blending keeps the fibre that juicing removes, and you can add curd or oats for protein. The calories can still be high, so keep to one glass.
